Stress Awareness Month: Mental Health Training for Safer Workplaces

Stress Awareness Month: Mental Health Training for Safer Workplaces

Stress Awareness Month highlights the importance of managing workplace stress and mental health. UK employers are increasingly expected by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to include mental health in risk assessments and provide structured support systems such as Mental Health First Aid training. Courses like IOSH Managing Sustainably also help organisations take a proactive approach to wellbeing by linking employee mental health to long-term business performance and sustainability.

Stress Awareness Month UK

April marks Stress Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to increasing awareness of stress, its causes, and how we can better manage it, both personally and in the workplace.

For employers, this isn’t just a wellbeing initiative anymore, it’s becoming a core health and safety responsibility.

With increasing guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there is now a clear expectation that organisations actively manage mental health risks in the same way they manage physical hazards.

At Lighthouse Safety, we support businesses in taking a proactive approach through training such as Mental Health First Aid and IOSH Managing Sustainably.

Why Stress Awareness Month Matters in 2026

Work-related stress, anxiety and depression continue to be one of the leading causes of workplace absence in the UK.

But beyond absence, unmanaged stress can lead to:

  • Reduced productivity

  • Poor decision making

  • Increased accidents and incidents

  • Low morale and high staff turnover

Stress doesn’t just affect individuals, it impacts entire teams and business performance.

This is why Stress Awareness Month is the perfect time for organisations to ask:

“Are we doing enough to support our people?”

HSE Focus: Mental Health Is a Workplace Risk

The HSE has made it clear that mental health must be treated as part of workplace risk management.

This includes:

  • Identifying stress-related hazards

  • Carrying out risk assessments for mental health

  • Implementing control measures

  • Providing support systems for employees

In practice, this means employers should:

  • Recognise signs of stress and mental health issues

  • Train managers to respond appropriately

  • Create a culture where people feel able to speak up

  • Put structured support in place

Mental health is no longer a “nice to have” – it’s a legal and moral responsibility.

How Mental Health First Aid Training Helps

One of the most effective ways to support employees is through Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training.

This training equips individuals with the skills to:

  • Spot early signs of mental health issues

  • Start supportive conversations

  • Signpost colleagues to professional help

  • Respond appropriately in a mental health crisis

Why MHFA Makes a Difference

✔ Builds confidence in handling difficult conversations

✔ Reduces stigma around mental health

✔ Creates a visible support network within the workplace

✔ Helps prevent issues from escalating

Having trained Mental Health First Aiders on site sends a strong message:

“We take wellbeing seriously.”

IOSH Managing Sustainably: A Broader Approach to Wellbeing

While Mental Health First Aid focuses on individual support, the IOSH Managing Sustainably course takes a wider, strategic view.

It helps managers understand:

  • Social sustainability and employee wellbeing

  • The link between wellbeing and business performance

  • Ethical leadership and workplace culture

  • Long-term organisational responsibility

Why This Matters

Modern businesses are expected to:

  • Support employee wellbeing

  • Demonstrate corporate responsibility

  • Align with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) expectations

The “S” in ESG – Social is increasingly focused on people, culture, and wellbeing.

IOSH Managing Sustainably helps organisations move from reactive support to proactive, long-term wellbeing strategies.

Integrating Mental Health into Risk Assessments

A key shift in recent years is the expectation that mental health is formally included in risk assessments.

This could involve assessing:

  • Workload and deadlines

  • Working hours and fatigue

  • Workplace culture and communication

  • Lone working or high-pressure roles

  • Exposure to traumatic situations

What Good Looks Like

A strong approach to mental health risk management includes:

  • Clear policies and procedures

  • Trained Mental Health First Aiders

  • Manager training (e.g. IOSH courses)

  • Open communication channels

  • Regular wellbeing check-ins

This is about creating a workplace where people feel supported, not just protected.

Why Businesses Are Acting Now

Forward-thinking organisations are recognising that:

  • Wellbeing improves productivity

  • Engaged employees perform better

  • Strong culture attracts and retains talent

  • Clients increasingly expect responsible employers

Mental health is now a business priority, not just a HR issue.
