Why is Health and Safety so Difficult?

So why is it? There are many different arguments to this question, such as:

• There is too much legislation
• Health & Safety advisors do not have practical knowledge of construction
• If we do that we would earn no money!

I can sympathise with them all!  One reason I believe Health & Safety is so difficult is because people have built an opinion of Health & Safety as its “over the top” and chose to avoid the subject rather than understand it.

Answer these questions ………

• Who actually (other than Health & Safety professionals) knows what the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 actually requires?
• Do you know your exact legal Health & Safety responsibilities as an employer?  Have you even tried to understand Health & Safety?

Many would answer no and for that reason Health & Safety is difficult.  For those of you who play a sport, how did you learn the rules? You played it and then as time went you then understood what you could and couldn’t do, yes?

Why don’t you do the same with Health & Safety?  If you try to understand something it will become easier to do. In the words of a famous Meerkat … SIMPLES!
