The Lighthouse Environment Challenge!

Ok, so as a Safety and Environmental company we felt it prudent to turn the spotlight on ourselves and question our own commitment to achieving positive Environmental standards, through good practice. How have we been doing so far and where could we make improvements. Charged with this fresh challenge (from our fearless Training Director Harry) our first step was to stealthily remove all of the bins located at each workstation to encourage everyone to utilise our brand spanking new recycling centre in the corner of the office…this, however did not go exactly to plan. When trying to remove an (unnamed) office members bin Harry almost lost a hand!! After some gentle coaxing Harry was able to tame the individual and successfully take the bin.

Phase 1 complete, on to the next element of the cunning plan. Contact our consumables providers and try to reduce the quantities of excess packaging our items are delivered in. This turned out to be tricky, as it turns out currently we can’t address this until our suppliers complete their own environmental reviews, we’ll come back to this one later.

Next stage is printer usage. Upon review we have found that this is one of our biggest expenditures and also one of our biggest polluters from the business. Our aim is to reduce the amount we print by a staggering 50% over the next 12 months. A substantial task but we’re confident that with a little bit of organisation, ingenuity and maybe a touch of luck that we can do it.

The final piece of the puzzle was to reduce our physical waste from our own processes such as paper, food wastes, paper plates from courses etc. Again an ambitious target has been set for our reduction of these but we believe we can do it. We will post statistics of our progress as they become available and I’m sure we will be proven successful.
