What Are Temporary Works and Why Do They Matter?

Temporary works are engineered, non-permanent structures like formwork, scaffolding, falsework, excavation supports, and hoardings that facilitate construction. Their failure poses significant risks, including injury, financial loss, and project delays.

The 1972 Loddon Bridge falsework collapse, which claimed lives and sparked the Bragg Report, ultimately led to the establishment of BS 5975 and the formalisation of roles like the Temporary Works Coordinator.

The current standard, BS 5975-1 & 2:2024, defines the procedures and responsibilities for safe temporary works management.

CITB Site Safety Plus – Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)

The CITB Temporary Works Coordinator course is a comprehensive two-day (approx. 15-hour) programme. It prepares professionals to manage temporary works effectively using the “4 Cs” (Communication, Co-operation, Coordination, Competence) and in compliance with BS 5975 procedures.

Learning modules include:

  • Definitions and examples of temporary works, and consequences of failure
  • Legal frameworks: HASWA and CDM regulations
  • Appointment of roles and stakeholder responsibilities
  • Planning process: design briefs, registers, permits
  • Construction oversight, safe dismantling, and record-keeping

The course culminates in a 30-minute open-book exam (25 multiple-choice questions, 72% pass mark)

On successful completion, you receive a 5-year CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, with available refreshers prior to expiry.
