What You Need to Know about the Changes to Industry Accreditation CSCS Cards

Industry Accreditation (IA), also known as Grandfather Rights, was in place to allow workers to obtain a CSCS card on the recommendation of an employer instead of recognised qualifications.  In 2010 this route was closed to new applicants but remained in place for those already holding a card enabling them to continue renewing their CSCS card on the same basis.

All IA cards issued from 1st January 2020 will expire on 31st December 2024 and cannot be replaced using the previous method.

What does this mean for current IA card holders?

Current IA card holders will need to obtain a recognised qualification to continue renewing their CSCS card after 2024. This can be achieved through on-the-job training, work experience or completing an NVQ. They will also need to register for the relevant CSCS test for their occupation and pass it before they can renew their card.

What about new applicants?

From 1st January 2020, new applicants will no longer be able to obtain a CSCS card through IA. They will need to obtain a recognised qualification and pass the relevant CSCS test for their occupation before they can apply for a card.
