The scheme requires all professional drivers to undertake 35 hours of accredited training over a 5 year period to maintain their Driver Qualification Card. This is known as Periodic Training.

At Lighthouse Safety we have a variety of specifically designed courses available to you covering a broad spectrum of everyday driver experiences that will suit any type of professional driver with any amount of experience or knowledge. However if you gained your Initial Driver Qualification Card after 9th September 2009 you have five years to complete your 35 hours of periodic training from the date of completing your Initial training.

For example: If you gained your Initial Driver CPC training when taking your test on 1st February 2012 you have until 31st January 2017 to complete your 35 hours of periodic training to maintain your card.

Course Content

The Driver CPC course is made up of 5 individual days, each lasting 7 hours in training. A driver wishing to gain their driver qualification card must complete all 5 days (in total, 35 hours training). The lists of days available are:

Day 1- Drivers Hours and Tachograph Rules

Day 2- Professional Driving

Day 3- Health & Safety and Personal Wellbeing

Day 4- Safe loading and Manual Handling

Day 5- Vehicle Inspections and Driver First Response

Assessment & Award

During the daily courses to measure performance and teaching the candidates will take a course quiz. There is no requirement to pass or to achieve a certain level to achieve. The only requirement is to complete 35 hours training.

At the end of each 7 hour course the candidate will be presented with a certificate of attendance from Lighthouse Safety Training. Once all 35 hours have been achieved the driver qualification card will automatically be sent out by the Driving Standards Agency.

Please note that drivers who hold the old style paper licence will need to apply for a photo licence as soon as possible  as your driver qualification card cannot be issued until you have done this.  Please follow this link to get started.

There are 5 individual days that can be completed; each day consists of 7 hours of instruction. Each day will start at 8.30 am – 5 pm.

Typical fees for open courses  are £300 + VAT for the entire 5 day course. Individual days training however are £65 + VAT;   This can vary for in house courses (dependant on location and numbers etc).

There is an additional £8.75 (upload to DVLA Website fee) per day attendance.  Should an individual do 5 days this would total £43.75

We run open Driver CPC courses regularly in our training centre in Rainham Kent

A Polite Notice

It pays to be selective when booking training courses because not all training providers are what they appear to be. When booking a Driver CPC Course you need to feel assured that your training provider is fully accredited to provide that training and is not then going to sub-contract the work. Lighthouse Safety Training are fully accredited by JAUPT  to provide the Driver CPC and proof of that accreditation can be seen at our accreditation page.

Driver CPC FAQ’s

Q. What type of Driver CPC do I need?

A. There are two forms of Driver CPC:

  • Initial Training
  • Periodic Training

Initial Training is designed for new drivers that have recently completed their LGV test after 2009 and is a practical test which requires to be passed.

If you have completed your LGV Driving License before 2009 you are required to complete Periodic Training which is the 35 hours of Classroom based learning with no requirement for a test.

Q. I have a B License and have grandfather rights for C class vehicles. Am I required to have Driver CPC?

A. Yes, you do. The Driver CPC agreement exists for the vehicle requirement not the license you hold. If you wish to drive using your B license you will still need Driver CPC Periodic Training.

Q. Are there any exemptions to the Driver CPC requirement?

A. Yes there are. However the decision on exemption relies on the employer and driver to make. If the decision is wrong and a driver has been found without the Driver CPC qualification, a £1000 fine will be given to each party involved (including a personal fine for the driver).

Listed below are the exemptions listed by JAUPT:

  • Vehicles with a maximum speed not exceeding 45 Kph
  • Vehicles used by or under control of the armed forces, civil defence the fire service and forces responsible for maintaining public order
  • Vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance purposes, or of new or rebuilt vehicles which have not yet been put into service
  • Vehicles used in states of emergency or assigned to rescue missions
  • Vehicles used in the course of driving lessons for any person wishing to obtain a driving licence or Driver CPC
  • Vehicles used for non-commercial carriage of passenger or goods – for personal use
  • Vehicles used for carrying material or equipment to be used by the driver in the course of his or her work, providing that driving the vehicle is not the drivers’ principle activity

Ultimately, it is up to the driver and their employer to decide if they are covered by these exemptions, and if necessary, justify it to the competent authority. Therefore the JAUPT would strongly advise that if a driver believes they are exempt from the Driver CPC that they should seek independent legal advice.
